Is CS too academic and too impractical?

The Programmer's Odyssey is an 'in the trenches' practical history of working as a computer programmer in the 20th century. You might think that would make it of interest to CS course students but that has not proved to be the case. There are no doubt many reasons for this but one contributory factor could be that CS departments are more interested in preparing their students for careers in academic research than in preparing them for careers as working programmers. Of course that view could easily be dismissed as sour grapes on the author's behalf so it's good to know that employers are increasingly in agreement with the overacademic nature of CS and have come up with '10 reasons to ignore computer science degrees'.
